Report: From Welfare to Risk

SSI Launches From Welfare to Risk at Crew Connect in Manila

Insurers and lenders review a vast amount of data when they assess a ship. What they almost never see is whether the officer on the bridge at 3am has slept properly in a week.

Working alongside leading P&I clubs, marine insurers, lenders and investors, we’ve produced the first rigorous, independent assessment linking crew welfare to safety risk, and for fatigue, mental health and psychological safety the link is already clear. That means risk is routinely priced and lending decisions are made with part of the picture missing.

While this means there is a great deal of work to be developed, we do not need to wait for a perfect dataset to do the right thing by seafarers. The steps that improve their wellbeing are the same ones that reduce risk.

What comes next is making this routine rather than exceptional, by working with these partners to build better welfare information into the processes they already use, so the whole fleet improves and not just the operators who were leading anyway.
