Green shipping corridors are set to accelerate the decarbonisation of shipping, but their impact will reach far beyond vessels and fuel. Done right, they can create decent jobs, strengthen communities and unlock national development gains.
Tides of Change sets out a framework for developing green corridors that are just and inclusive by design. Produced with the Ocean Stewardship Coalition at the UN Global Compact and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, the report looks at what a just and equitable transition means in practice for the workers, communities and countries connected to a corridor.
The report examines the socio-economic opportunities and risks green corridors bring for:
Workers – from decent green job creation to upskilling and safeguarding livelihoods through the transition
Communities – from local economic opportunity to the health and environmental benefits of moving away from fossil fuels
Countries – from technology transfer and capacity building to the risk of leaving developing economies behind
It closes with practical recommendations for individual organisations and project consortia alike, covering just transition planning, workforce development, stakeholder engagement, and the governance structures needed to keep green corridors transparent and accountable.
