Initiative : Marine Biodiversity and Ocean Health Roadmap and Breakthrough Goal Launched at COP29

The SSI and partners launched the 2030 Marine Biodiversity and Ocean Health Roadmap and Breakthrough at COP29. The Breakthrough goal is to reduce the global shipping industry’s impact on marine biodiversity and ocean health by 30% by 2030. The Roadmap provides immediate actions and future milestones to enable the shipping industry to achieve this goal and support UN SDG 14.

These milestones are aligned with several other international sustainability commitments and initiatives, including the Paris Agreement, Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, and the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy.

The milestones were researched by Equal Routes and the Roadmap was launched by the MENA Oceans Initiative in November 2024, supported by the Marrakech Partnership for Global Climate Action and a network of partners including the Climate Champions team, the UN Foundation and the Ocean and Climate Platform.
